Giglio Castello is the oldest bourg, rich in history, charm and traditions; in September, the patron saint Mamiliano is celebrated, a particularly attended and heartfelt moment by the island’s community. During the days dedicated to celebrations, traditions alternate between sacred and profane: a mass and a solemn procession in honor of the saint mark the beginning of the intense program of this castle festival.
Culinary moments never lack expression of the most typical island cuisine, such as the wild rabbit but also great fun in the plaza with the traditional Quadriglia dance. However, one of the most attended and anticipated moments is the traditional Palio of the Donkeys, an ancient dispute between districts Centro, Casamatta, Rocca e Cisterna that every year sees its respective horse rider contend for first place.
In 2021, the San Mamiliano Fest of Giglio Island has not yet been confirmed due to the current Covid-19 restrictions.
A shot of the San Mamiliano celebration in the 1950’s, which has always been one of the most awaited moments.
